Your garage is part of your home, so you want to keep it guarded against intruders. You likely keep at least one valuable item or piece of equipment in the garage, and an attached garage can also provide access to your home. The following are a few ways to make your garage more secure.
1. Protect the emergency release
Garage door openers come with an emergency release that can be used in the event of a power outage. Unfortunately, some unscrupulous thieves have figured out how to pull the release when the door is closed by using a straightened coat hanger to catch the pull string. There are a couple of options to prevent this.
You can remove the release, but this can be inconvenient if you do have a power outage. Another option is to zip-tie the release string to the opener so it can't be pulled unless the tie is cut. There are also devices you can install that create a barrier to the handle so it can't be reached, even with a hanger, through a closed door.
2. Never store the remote in the car
Most people would never leave their keys in the car, but they are perfectly content to leave the opener remote in plain sight. Your garage door remote is just like a key. Always store it in the house when you are parked in the driveway. When out and about, toss it in your bag or bring it in with you. If you must leave it in the car, at least hide it from view.
Another option is to upgrade to a remoteless garage door opener. These do not even have the standard opener remote. Instead, you use a smartphone app or a code punched into a keypad by the door to gain entry. As a bonus, you can assign temporary codes as well, which is handy for allowing contractors into the home when you aren't there. Call garage door opener suppliers to learn more about your options.
3. Invest in a smart opener
Smart openers allow you to control your garage no matter where you are. You can log in via your phone or computer to verify that the garage door is closed, for example. Many connect to home security systems, which means you may even get notifications if a door is left open or if someone else opens your garage door.
