Any major home repair that needs doing often requires that the owner be home and present during the service. To do that, you have to take some time off of work, since most contractors and service technicians generally do not work weekends. When you have limited time available to you to take off from work, you want to pinpoint how much time is necessary. In this example, you want to know how much time is needed for a garage door replacement service. Really, that depends on a number of factors, but assume that you are having a professional do the job. Then the time allotments look something like the following.
Disconnect from the Opener
First things first, if you have a garage door opener, the contractor needs to remove the door from the opener. This can take anywhere from ten minutes to remove a couple of braces and connecting brackets to thirty minutes for more complex openers. If you want to cut down the time, spend your own time on the preceding weekend disconnecting the opener yourself.
Remove the Door from Its Tracks
Most garage doors have a caster and guide track system. The contractor has to remove the door from the guide tracks. This can be done one of two ways. Either he/she has to first remove one of the tracks from the floor of the garage and pull it away from the garage door, or the door has to be lifted up overhead until it begins to slide out of the tracks and topple down onto the floor. The former option is generally safer, especially if you have a really heavy old garage door. The other guide track may be removed as well, since it is generally easier to slide the new garage door into the old tracks when the tracks are laying on the garage floor. This entire process will take about an hour, possibly two, depending on the size of the door, the difficulty with removing one or both guide tracks, and the guide system it uses
Installing the Replacement Door
Assuming that you are not requesting a custom door or any other type of garage door except one similar to what you had, this process will require another thirty minutes to an hour. The new door has casters that have to be slid into the guide tracks. Then the guide tracks are lifted into place and secured back into the garage door floor. Finally, the opener is attached to the new garage door, and the door is tested before the job is declared complete. All told, you should set aside at least a full morning or a full afternoon off of work to be home for this project.
